I like videos that are short and to the point. Here is one where an enthusiastic fan of a Sodastream seltzer machine demonstrates how easy it is to make soda at home.

Top 5 Reasons You Need A Home Seltzer Machine

Pure Seltzer MachineIf you love drinking seltzer water and saving money, a home seltzer machine may be just what you are looking for. We recently purchased one of these machines and it has really changed the way we drink at our house. A seltzer carbonation machine is about the size of a coffee maker and uses no batteries or electricity. Its all powered by a CO2 canister hidden in the back of the machine.

It only takes a few seconds to make nearly unlimited amounts of sparkling water and soda. Here are 5 reasons why you need a seltzer machine:

Reason #1: You Control the Level of Fizziness

For sparkling water lovers, one of the key benefits of a seltzer water maker is that you get to control the level of fizziness of your beverages. Some people prefer just a slight fizz. Others like lots and lots of bubbles. Usually it only takes 2-3 button presses to fully carbonate a liter of water. I always add an extra push for more fizz.

Reason #2: Drink Healthy

Besides controlling the fizziness, you also control what goes into your soda. This provides a great opportunity to teach your family about healthy alternatives to high-fructose corn syrup name brand sodas. Instead of sugary syrups, why not use a squeeze of lime juice or a splash of cranberry juice. You can also make your own flavors with ginger, green tea, or anything else you find in your kitchen.

In addition to flavors, you also control the type of water. You can use plain old tap water, or you can use filtered water from a Brita filter..

Reason #3: Go green

Many people would argue that this is the most important benefit of owning a home seltzer water maker. Most of these machines include one or more sturdy and reusable soda bottles that are good for three years or more. By reusing your bottles instead of throwing them away, you greatly reduce your plastic bottle waste. Reusing is even better than recycling.

Secondly, these machines can help reduce your carbon footprint. There is no point in paying for someone else to manufacture, fill, and then ship plastic bottles around the country when you have all the materials at home.

Reason #4: Reduce your grocery bill

The soda chargers included with most carbonated water machines are good for about 60 liters of carbonated water. Larger (120 liter) sizes are also available. Premium sparkling water can cost several dollars per liter at the store. Home seltzer machines can make a liter of carbonated water for about 20-30 cents per liter.

Reason #5: Unlimited Carbonated Water, Seltzer Water, and Club Soda

Since you have all the materials at your finger tips, these machines can make virtually unlimited amounts of carbonated water on demand. If you run out of soda at a birthday party, or club soda at a cocktail party, it only takes a few seconds to make more. You won’t have to run off to the store to buy more.

The convenience, economic, environmental, and health benefits of owning a seltzer machine make these machines perfect additions to your home. I’ve talked to several people who have given them as house warming gifts, wedding presents, and to students going off to college.

Seltzer Machine Savings – Save Money and The Environment

Pure Seltzer MachineI was doing some research about the benefits of a home seltzer machine.  I came across a funny fact.  The old Sodastream tagline was “Get Busy With The Fizzy!”.  Some of you might remember some old commercials featuring that tagline.  When I first discovered Sodastream soda makers I thought they were a fairly new invention.  I’ve started seeing them pop up in all sorts of catalogs and high-end kitchen stores.  But really they’ve been around a long time.  Sodastream itself was a household brand for a while in the UK.

So these machines have been around for a while but they are finding new resonance in today’s world.  Everyone who has seen one will tell you how easy and convenient they are.  But I think there are two main benefits that are particularly attractive in today’s world.

Seltzer machines save money.

Seltzer machines save the environment.

Let’s first talk about money.  Once you’ve paid for the machine, the only reoccurring expense is for the charging canister refills (and flavors if you want them).  I mainly use mine for seltzer water and use fresh juice for flavor.  Each carbonator is good for about 60 liters of sparkling water.  If you need more, it is pretty easy to order refills.  I looked around at different websites.  Most users say that it only costs about 20-30 cents per liter to make fresh home made seltzer water.   Based on my experience, this is pretty accurate.

Regarding the environment… as a family we are trying to reduce our impact on the environment.  Before we purchased our seltzer machine, we were are acutely aware of our plastic bottle waste.  Our recycle bin was usually filled to the top with plastic bottles.  Yes, we were recycling it.  But why recycle when you can reuse.

After we started using our seltzer machine, we quickly cut down our plastic bottle waste.  We don’t put many bottles into our recycle bin anymore.  The seltzer machine came with some durable and reusable soda bottles.  We wash and reuse these bottles over and over again.  They are designed to hold up to many uses.  They also have special seals to really hold in the carbonation.

Our seltzer maker is a win for us on all accounts.  Saving money and saving the environment makes our sparkling water taste even more refreshing.

Seltzer Machine

This cool little seltzer machine from Sodastream can turn ordinary tap water into sparkling seltzer water in under 30 seconds.

We were over at our friend’s house for a dinner party and my friend brought out his fancy new seltzer machine.  We were a little skeptical at first but became intrigued and fascinated as he demonstrate how it worked.

A seltzer machine looks like a small coffee maker, but with a soda bottle instead of a coffee pot.  It is actually quite stylish and doesn’t take up much room on the counter.  There are no power cords or batteries involved.  It is all powered by the CO2 charger hidden inside the back of the machine.

Making seltzer at home only requires only three steps.

Step 1:

Fill up the reusable soda bottle with water.  You can use store bought water or water straight from the tap.  The best tasting and most economical source is to use chilled water from a Brita pitcher in the fridge.

Step 2:  Insert the bottle into the seltzer machine and lock it into place.

Step 3:  Press the charging button three times.  This is the fun part.  Each time you press the button, you will hear and see a jet of carbonation shooting into your soda bottle.  It makes a really cool wooshing noise.  The instructions recommend that three presses is enough to fully charge a liter of seltzer water.  But you can do more or less depending on your fizzyness preferences.  I personally like really fizzy water and usually press it another one or two times.

After that, you are ready to enjoy crisp, refreshing seltzer water.  If you are a fan of seltzer water, club soda, sparkling mineral water, then you are done at this point.  But if you enjoy a little flavor in your soda water, you can also add a twist of lime, a splash of juice, or select from the many flavor syrups available.

Guess what?  We ordered our own seltzer machine the very next day.  We love it!
